Milk Allergy: You have to look in more places than food and drinks

Published by realityrain at 4:17 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand when you, or a loved one, has a milk allergy.  My grandparents try but do not quite understand.  I think that part of their misunderstanding comes from the fact that I was not diagnosed with a milk allergy until I was 14.  To them, I had milk all that time and it didn’t bother me so is it really that big of a deal?  Well, I was sick a lot as a child but, again, to them I think I may have just been a “sickly” child.  I don’t worry too much about it and when at their house I am just careful about what I eat.

A couple of Christmas’s ago let me understand just how much they did not get it.  My grandmother was very excited to give me a bottle of lotion.  I didn’t say anything to her, and thanked her profusely like a good granddaughter, then laughed when the hubby and I left.  The beautiful bottle of lotion was milk and lavendar.  It did not just have milk in it, the actual name of the product said milk.

This is an important lesson to everyone dealing with a milk allergy.  Not everyone is going to understand that a milk allergy means NO milk.  Not just that I cannot sit down to glass of milk but that I cannot ingest it any form.  It is important to look at the gifts given to you or your child

Is your son allergic to soy or rice? You may try drinking those instead of dairy milk then you do not have to worry about kissing him and him breaking out, soy milk tastes much better than rice milk but both are fine once you get used to them. As to the lotions, read the ingredients carefully and choose lotions with the most natural ingredients possible. I know many people with dairy allergies that also have very sensitive skin, whether the product contains dairy or not. I have to be very careful as to which laundry detergents, soaps, lotions, and fabric softeners I use even if they do not contain milk products. I must also explain to the physicians and pharmacists that I have a dairy allergy and cannot take medicine that has a lactose covering. I was a colicky (sp?) baby and my mom has thought that this was because I was given dairy milk at much too young an age because when she switched me to soy formula I was fine until I began having dairy as I got older. I do hope your son grows out of his allergy but it becomes very easy to live a life without dairy and is not as bad as it seems. Feel free to email me at realityrain78@yahoo.com if you have any questions or concerns about having a dairy allergy.

Another recipe site you may look at (besides my recipe sites www.dairyfreerecipes.today.com and www.thefrugalhome.com)

http://ourgaggleofgirls.com/recipes/ I used to use this site a lot and she has some really great recipes. You wouldn’t feed most to a six month old but you could eat them yourself and not have to worry about affecting your baby!
