Milk Allergy or Lactose Intolerance?
Many people think that having a dairy allergy is the same as having a lactose intolerance. This can be very dangerous for some people as the reactions of those with an allergy are much more severe than those with an intolerance.
What does it mean to have a milk allergy as opposed to a lactose intolerance?
Lactose Intolerance
It may seem obvious to some but lactose intolerance is just what it says, an intolerance to the suga lactose found in milk. Generally, this causes bloating or diarrhea and while it may make you very uncomfortable it is bearable and many people consume dairy products every day who have an intolerance.
Dairy Allergy
A dairy allergy is much more serious. Symptoms of an allergy to milk can range from rashes to anaphylaxis which can result in death. Someone with a milk allergy has to be vigilant in checking the food that they eat and the products they use to keep themselves from ingesting milk.
I had various health problems growing up and a friend of my mom’s suggested I might have a milk allergy. I went off of dairy for a week then tried to have some milk. I was very very sick. I was fourteen at that time and have spent the majority of my life without dairy. I have learned a great deal about my allergy and have been pleased that non-dairy products get better every year.
I will be sharing my dairy free life with you, how it affects eating out, recipes at home, products such as lotions, and how my dairy loving husband copes with a house with very little dairy!
